Hot Chicken Sissy!

Update: Rocky’s has closed

Back in February of this year, I noticed (and wrote about) a new eatery that had opened at 2603 Hendersonville Rd in this “New – Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack, Arden article”.

Rocky's Hot Chicken ShackThe unassuming exterior of Rocky’s gives no indication of how hot it is inside.

Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack ExteriorNo, this isn’t the hot part . . .

Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack Interior
This is!

Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack Legs
Notice the one toothpick? That was how Rocky identified the “Mild” (not so mild) leg. The other leg of the Two Leg order ($4.00) was specially made to “less than Mild”, which Rocky suggested after watching me hesitate over his description of Mild.

Rocky’s serves three types of chicken orders: Huge Breast ($5.00), Two Legs ($4.00) and 6 Whole Wings Not Cut ($6.50) – that’s it. Believe me, that’s enough! All orders are served the old time chicken shack way – on a couple slices of bread.

Two sides are available: Potato Salad and Cole Slaw ($1.25 each). Sides come with a fork and are served in styrofoam cups.

I asked Rocky if I could take a picture of a to-go order of wings “to show my friends” before he wrapped them up.

Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack WingsThe flavor Rocky gets with his secret seasoning is truly delicious. The chicken comes to you extremely moist and juicy (right out of the fryer), wrapped in crunchy-battered skin. So this is the second time I’ve eaten the skin on fried chicken recently. If you read this “Fried Chicken Love” article, you’ll remember I surprised myself by eating the skin at Daddy D’s.

Back to the heat. Taking a similar approach to wine tasting, I started with the “less than Mild” leg, planning on notching it up with the “Mild” leg – pathetic, I know.

Long story short, I ate the very good “less than Mild” first, but after a couple of bites of the “Mild”, I asked Rocky for a plain piece of bread so I could try to quell the fire on my tongue. He looked at me with pity in his eyes, telling me that his wife thinks ketchup is hot. Then he offered to put it back in the fryer, taking a lot of the heat off. Thank goodness.

Notes: 1. Rocky’s is Cash Only and 2. Rocky will make no-heat-at-all (plain) chicken for us sissies if we ask for it.

Read this “Rocker by night, fried-chicken wizard by day” article for more photos and details about Rocky and his shack.

Ohhhh noooo… just called Rocky to place a take-out order and got the message that he is CLOSED (!!!). His message states it's for personal reasons and changes to his lease. He says he hopes to open again in a new location and thanks everyone for supporting him and his chicken. Let's hope he works things out SOON. We need our Hot Chicken fix!

I never did go to Rocky’s when I lived in Black Mountain,NC for almost over 2 years, but not surprised they closed. In 2 years while living in Black Mountain, I saw at least 3 places that closed, remained closed or re-opened as something else. Part of it is during the winter months tourists don’t visit as much, these places loose business because of it, and can’t keep up the rent, but come spring they have opened as another restaurant or bar. Black Bird restaurant closed in Black Mountain and moved to Asheville. I think they felt they would have better business if they moved to a more populated city. Black Mountain was a great small town, but it does not drive big time named restaurants and bars there because there is no demand for it. Go figure, the town only had one post office.
