At Main Street Coffee Co in Abbeville, SC, coffee drinks are hot, tasty and made by Mennonites. They make a pretty good Raspberry Italian Soda, too.
Exploring upstate South Carolina’s back roads, PIC and I stumbled upon Abbeville, an absolutely wonderful town anchored by an absolutely wonderful town square.
Surrounding the park-like center of the square are meticulously kept quaint shops, the Court House and the Opera House.
Not just any opera house, The Abbeville Opera House is the official State Theatre of South Carolina, hosting live performances since 1908! Still going strong, here’s their winter 2010-2011 line-up.
If you visit Abbeville on horseback, be sure to water your steed at the fountain in the center of the square, presented to Abbeville in 1912 by the Humane Society Alliance “to improve the lot of workhorses”. Small cups were placed at the bottom of the fountain for cats and dogs.
Integrated into Abbeville life is a large Mennonite community. Mennonites own and operate town restaurants (Dutch Oven and Yoder’s Dutch Kitchen), a new market and primitive gift shop (Court Square Market) and Main Street Coffee Co.
Our Latte and Raspberry Italian Soda were perfect and the service was very friendly. Taking advantage of their free Wi-Fi, we sipped and surfed the net. We’ll be back to try the restaurants!
