Usually I save hot dog consumption for ball games, but a group of us decided to see if we could find (and agree on) the best hot dog in the Asheville/Hendersonville area. We’re not talking about all-beef, bratwurst, or any kind of specialty dog – just your basic hot dog.
The only criteria for contestants is that the restaurant have the word “Dog” in its name somewhere.
These posts will be short and sweet: basic comments, who won and why.

Dog Town
4195 Old Haywood Rd

Dog Town Special with mustard, chili and onions ($1.29) and a Foot Long with mustard, chili, onions and slaw ($3.19). Sweet Tea with free refills ($1.59).
Kraut Dog with mustard, chili and onions ($1.59) and a Dog Town Special with mustard, chili and onions ($1.29). Two small Old Fashioned Mild Shakes ($2.25). Large is $3.89.
The winner of Round One is . . . Hot Dog World!
Because: all around dog flavors bigger and better than Dog Town’s bland contenders. Toppings at Hot Dog World were also more flavorful.
Notes:
- Shakes at Dog Town are some of the best in town. That includes ice cream places. I threw my shake out at Hot Dog World because it tasted like a McDonald’s shake, made from a mix with with little or no ice cream.
- Dog Town’s Sweet Tea was “perfect” according to the judge who ordered it. Not too sweet, but sweet enough.
- Hot Dog World served sweeter Sweet Tea.
- Dog Town’s slaw tasted better to the judge who had the Foot Long at both places.
