Coffee Culture at Old City Java

Part of downtown Knoxville, TN, Wikipedia defines Old City as “originally part of a raucous and vice-ridden section of town known as “The Bowery”. “Presently, Old City is an offbeat urban neighborhood, home to several unique restaurants, bars, clubs, and shops.” It’s also said Old City is now known at Knoxville’s “club district”.

We found ourselves at Old City Java meeting a friend of Teen Daughter on our drive back to Western NC from Indiana a couple weeks ago. What a fun place to know about! It’s referred to as “the oldest coffee shop in Knoxville”, but I haven’t been able to find any dates. They refer to themselves as, “. . . a Quality & Community driven Coffee Shop located in Knoxville. We proudly serve Counter Culture Coffee, Rishi Teas & a fine selection of baked goods.”

The main door takes you into one of two seating areas. This is where the coffee magic happens. Our lattes were very good and priced similarly to most coffee shops.

To get to the other seating area, walk through the doorway on the right (above, where the young lady in the striped top is standing).

Check out the ceiling. We all loved the original art pieces hung on the walls.

Quite a few people take advantage of Old City Java’s free wi-fi. It’s a nice place to hang out for awhile reading, catching up with friends or surfing the Web.

A revitalization of this part of town began in the 1980′s and is continuing today. Here are a couple interesting buildings on the same street.
