Dog Fight – Round 3!

Dog Fight Round Three had an obvious winner as did rounds one and two. Keep reading to see who it was; Papa’s Dog House or Celebrity’s Hot Dogs.

First up – Papa’s Dog House. If these dogs hadn’t been so good, I would have said it was because they’d only been open for two weeks. They really had only been open for two weeks. While we were there, the health inspector stopped in for a surprise visit. This and plenty of customers kept the one woman running the place hopping! Wonder where “Papa” was.

Papa's Dog House

Papa’s is a little place attached to an Exxon Station in East Flat Rock. Their address is listed as 104 West Blue Ridge Road, but most people pull in off Spartanburg Hwy. It’s impressively spic and span inside, but I’m planning on stopping back in a few months to see if they keep it that way.

A couple things set this place apart from some others: they only serve all beef dogs, cook them all on a grill and make their own chili. Yes, I know there are other hot dog places making their own chili and grill their dogs, but this chili has that homemade look and taste. The dog below is listed on the menu as Papa’s Hot Dog, their “standard” and sells for $1.00. It comes with mustard, chili and onions. A side of fries will set you back $1.60.

And here are a couple other versions of the same “standard” with mustard, chili, onions and slaw (for an additional .25 cents):

And with mustard and sauerkraut:

Their menu is a little random for a hot dog place; Pancakes or French Toast $3.50, Biscuit Sandwich $1.75, Triple Decker Club $4.25 and Hanburger Steak $5.50.

Celebrity’s Hot Dogs is located closer to Asheville on Brevard Road.  The name Celebrity’s comes from famous racing family ownership.

Celebrity's Hot Dogs

Inside, you’ll get the hot dog treatment along with lots of racing memorabilia. There are helmets, flags and an impressive autograph wall where some of the greats have left their mark.

We each chose a different dog, keeping them consistent with dogs judged. I had the Kraut Dog with mustard and sauerkraut for $1.39.

Celebrity's Hot Dogs

PIC went with the “All the Way” Dog with mustard, chili, onion and slaw for $1.59.

Celebrity's Hot Dogs

Judge number three had a Chili Dog with mustard, chili and onion for $1.69. Fries are $1.55.

Celebrity's Hot Dogs

And finally, judge four had a Slaw Dog with mustard and slaw. Onion Rings are $2.15.

Celebrity's Hot Dogs

Wish I’d had a chance to stop by during Celebrity’s 6th anniversary celebration last week. I’ll definitely be swinging by to try a very fairly priced root beer float ($2.29) noticed during the Dog Fight.

Winning Round 3, hands down, was Papa’s Dog House! Personally, I had my doubts, but just like the “scary food truck” that won our Food Truck Throwdown, Papa’s impressed all four judges with their dog flavor and quality.

Round 4 is up next and then a final overall winner will be named.

Tell us who you go to for the “best hot dog” and why.

One Response to Dog Fight – Round 3!

  1. Susan says:

I really don’t like to eat hot dogs out, too scary, which is why I am glad you are ‘judging’ them. I may try out your overall winner. I am originally from Buffalo NY where the hot dogs are grilled over charcoal. Check out Teds hot dogs, we always go there as soon as we get off the plane. I grill my hot dogs at home on a gas grill. After trying all the brands of hot dogs available in the grocery stores – our overall winner is Dietz&Watson New York Brand beef franks (natural casing).
