Owners Edson and Jesse Roque had a plan. They wanted to open a second, smaller seasonal location in Saluda called Blue Gypsy. It looks like they are just about ready to open on their target date: Thursday, September 22nd.
Love the color scheme, don’t you? It helps to have artists in the family.
Not sure if it’s going to stay there, but there’s a cute fireplace outside on the deck. Inside is very compact and decorated with what looks like “found objects” hanging from the ceiling and walls. Fun!
I got a hold of their menu, which looks like even more fun. Populated with Small Bites ($1.75-$6.75) like Spicy Goobers, Devils on Horseback, Scornbread, Eastern Trade Wings and Voodoo Bread; Taquitos ($$4.50 for two); Soups ($2.75/cup, $$5/bowl) Salads & Sandwiches (small/large $4-$8.75) named Thieves Hord, India Chick Sandwich and Drifter; Family Favorites ($8.75-$9.75) Chili Spaghetti and Cluck-in-a-bucket; Weenies ($4.75 for 2 “teenie weenies” – not your usual dogs); Desserts ($5-$5.75) Saints Cake, Sweet Pinky Crisp and Jujubajoo. There’s also a kids menu with three items priced at $2.75 for kids under 10.

NOT in the Roque’s plan, but an opportunity that came along too good to pass up, was another Never Blue location at 27 Broadway St. in Asheville. That’s right next door to Sazarac, where Tingles Cafe used to be. This location has a purple and red color scheme. Not only are both the Roque’s amazing cooks, they also do most of their own construction and decorating. Still to come is partner and artist Pam Cosner’s signature mosaic tile work on the bar and up the wall. Here’s a peek inside, but keep in mind they’re not done.
Once the Asheville Never Blue is opened – target date Saturday, October 1st – it will be known as Never Blue on Broadway and the Hendersonville location will be called Never Blue on Main.
Both Never Blue locations will have similar menus, with a few items unique to each.
