I’ve wanted to stop at Biltmore Coffee Traders, just South of downtown Asheville on Hendersonville Road, forever. Yesterday was finally the day!
The shop’s been around a long time, but Laura & Rick Telford took ownership about a year and a half ago.
Stepping inside, I was surprised to see a roaster sitting front and center.
Laura was working on bagging a variety of roasted beans when I walked in. You can see why she was doing that in the picture below. Their coffee is popular and doesn’t stay on the shelves long.
Laura took time to tell me what their shop is all about and give me a tour of the new addition they’re building. New windows are expected this Friday, followed by a French door. It’s going to be a cozy spot to hang out, especially snuggled up near the planned corner wood stove. They hope to have it ready sometime this Fall.
Once the addition is done, the original building will become more of a retail area and place to order your coffee. One of the new products the Telfords would like to bring in are Biltmore Coffee Traders mugs made by a local potter.
Laura bakes everything from scratch (muffins, cookies, scones, biscotti, doughnuts), except the bagels. They also make smoothies.
It looked like all 16oz lattes are made with three shots of espresso, so I asked for two in mine. It was a good latte. Perfect for washing down these:
I didn’t get the ingredients for the biscotti, but here’s what’s in this soft in the middle, crunchy around the edges, not too sweet cookie: Organic unbleached flour, Organic Whole Wheat Pastry flour, Organic Oats, Organic Demerara Sugar, Organic Raisins, Peanut Butter, Organic Wheat Germ, Local Free Range Eggs, Butter, Organic Cinnamon, Aluminum Free Baking Soda, Organic Vanilla and Sea Salt.
Current hours can be seen on Biltmore’s website and Facebook Page: Monday – Friday 6:30am to 4:30pm, Saturday 8am -12 noon, Closed Sunday.
Laura Telford (and her husband) really struck me as prime examples of entrepreneurial spirit and do-it-yourself fortitude. I really hope they succeed long-term and plan on supporting them as much as possible.
