NC Mountain State Fair = Farmers & Local Food

Corn Dogs, Funnel Cakes and Turkey Legs. Rides that swing, whip and flip. Bingo, Ring Toss and Whack-a-Mole. This year’s NC Mountain State Fair had them all.

“As the 2013 N.C. Mountain State Fair came to a closed Sunday night [9/15/2013], fair organizers had many reasons to celebrate including a record-breaking attendance. The 20th fair entertained 191,596 people during its 10-day run at the WNC Agricultural Center. The previous record was set in 2007 with 187,819 attendees.”

The fair is also about North Carolina mountain agriculture. Set back a little and off to the right from the main gate was the “Mooturnity Tent” – cows about to calve were in spotless pens. This little one was brand new.

Farther back, were four or five long barns lined with stalls. Farmers from all over WNC were showing off their stock and happy to chat about their farms and farming methods. Some of the stock had a few choice words to share, too. Caption this photo in a comment.

It tears at my heart when a farm, especially one that’s been around for generations, goes away. Future Farmers of America (FFA) gives me hope. This crew seemed like a great bunch of kids. I still get a kick out of being addressed as “Ma’am”.

Two of the guys walked me over to see their cattle.  The barn was so far toward the back of the fair, it was actually outside the back gate!

Time to head over to the exhibition hall for some eye-popping, award-winning, home-grown, home-preserved foods.

Wow! That’s the only word I had.

Can’t wait for next year’s fair. Maybe I’ll go on some rides!
