Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club

Located on Duke University’s Durham campus, both the gracious Inn and championship golf course are open to the public. See golf course details here.

Last week, I was fortunate enough to spend a night in one of the Inn’s many suites and tour the property.

The graceful Inn and championship golf course underwent an expansion (Inn) and renovation (Golf Course) within the last decade. Major additions were made to the Inn in 2005, but you’d never know it. For instance, the transition from the original meeting room area to the expansive new wing, including a beckoning patio area, are seamlessly done in the same architectural style.

One thing I really appreciated was the staffed conference area desk. If you’ve ever been to, or managed a conference, you know how crazy it makes you when you need a cable or extra seating and can’t find anyone to help. Problem solved.

The next round of upgrades to decor and finishes are just about complete. Beautiful new ergonomic leather chairs now grace all meeting rooms.

My King Suite was similar to the room pictured below. Another thing I like about Washington Duke Inn is that it’s set up so well for families, as well as other types of travelers, with a large number of suites.

If you’ve traveled with kids, you know the value of an indoor pool. The Inn has a great indoor pool and you can have access to a nearby fitness facility with an outdoor pool for only $10 per day! The hotel is also pet friendly, even offering pet sitters! See accommodation details here.

On site restaurants, the Bull Durham Bar, and public spaces are luscious. My absolute favorite place to hang out and relax on cushy seating with a drink, book, and/or laptop (free wi-fi throughout the property) is the patio overlooking the golf course outside the bar. I could kick myself for not taking pictures. Too busy enjoying, I guess.

A “Lunch at the Fairview Dining Room” article is coming soon. Oh, and they serve Afternoon Tea. Be sure to let them know a day ahead so they can have it ready for you. I missed it this time, but will definitely sign up for my next visit! Love afternoon tea!! See dining options here.

If you’re a regular Carolina Epicurean reader, you know I appreciate history and architecture as well as all things food and drink. The Inn’s history as it relates to the Duke family is pretty interesting. Throughout the Inn, the family is honored with photos, sculptures, pieces of furniture and even some of the children’s clothing in a small museum-ish alcove. Love the little sailor-type boy’s outfit. See a brief history of Duke University and the Duke family involvement here (.pdf).
