Dragonfly Cafe Shocker!

Flat Rock – I admit to being prejudiced. For some reason, I couldn’t get past a certain restaurant location in Flat Rock.

It had housed two absolutely horrible restaurants in succession. When the next one went in, I just couldn’t make myself go. Irrational, I know, but I guess I was thinking the place defined the eatery, rather than the other way around.

When this latest place moved across the parking lot into the space previously occupied by Just Vino, I still didn’t want to go. I loved (still do) Just Vino’s owner, his wine shop, and the wine dinners he put on in the dining area. My problem with the dining space was that it put me off because it smelled musty. Some people have told me they couldn’t smell anything. Others say they could.

A couple weeks ago I decided to bite the bullet and go to Dragonfly Cafe with my friend, Sweet Tooth, for lunch.

Shocker of all shockers, it’s fabulous!

The musty smell is gone and the food is really good!

Sweet Tooth went savory and ordered a Cobb Salad ($9.95): baby spring mix, turkey, ham, tomatoes, blue cheese, and bacon. Ranch or Blue Cheese dressings are available. There’s a lot on the plate, so don’t be surprised if you decide to bring some home with you.

There just aren’t a lot of places that offer Egg Salad Sandwiches ($9.95) anymore. I love egg salad, so of course I ordered it. It’s served warm. Not hot, just warm. And you have your choice of bread. I always choose the classic I grew up with – white toast.

I took one bite and my eyes went wide! The flavor knocked my socks off! Since palates differ, you might not get the subtle smokey flavor I got. It could have had something to do with the Moscato ($6/glass!) I was drinking? Even if you don’t get “smokey”, you’ll love the flavor.

You also get a choice of sides. If you’re a regular reader, you might know by now that if I can get asparagus, I will. It was cooked perfectly, but what stood out again was the flavor. It was amazing. Made my taste buds sing. My only suggestion for Dragonfly would be to pull back a little on the salt. If you don’t eat salt, make sure you let them know. If they can’t make it without salt, don’t order it.

We were both happily full, so didn’t order dessert. What we didn’t know was that everyone gets a complimentary sweet end to their meal. This might change, so don’t expect it. Just be happily surprised if it shows up. This time it was a very tasty mixed fruit cobbler with whipped cream.

When you enter, a sign at a host stand asks you to wait to be seated. Unfortunately, no one saw us or chose to seat us until we stepped further into the restaurant. Servers are good, but might be a bit overwhelmed when busy and still need to hit their groove. They got behind on clearing tables to the point that when we left, all unoccupied tables needed clearing. I’m expecting this to get better and not be a problem in the future.

As of this writing, Dragonfly’s tables are covered in white tablecloths. Sweet Tooth and I suggest they follow the lead of places like Never Blue and use white paper on top of the cloths. It’ll save time and money and still maintains the ambiance.

Beer and Wine are offered by the glass and bottle. If I hadn’t been driving, I would have ordered a couple glasses of wine at those prices.

Dragonfly Cafe is still working out a few minor kinks, but the food makes it absolutely Epicurean Recommended. It’s nice to have another good restaurant in Flat Rock.
