White Duck (La Pata Blanca) Taco Shop

White Duck Taco

What's in a (nick)name? For husband and wife team, Laura Reuss and Ben Mixson, Laura's translated to the name of their first restaurant: White Duck Taco Shop. She was tagged at a previous Chef gig with "La Pata Blanca"  by coworkers when she "frequently got excited and talked too much to the kitchen staff" White Duck opened this past May in the north end of Asheville's River Arts District (RAD). They share a building with Hatchery Studios, a collection of artist galleries and … [Read more...]

Blue Water Seafood Co, Hendersonville

A "good" fresh seafood market-restaurant in the mountains of Western North Carolina? Don't be ridiculous! That's exactly what I thought......until a group of us had lunch at Blue Water Seafood Co. and Wine Market in Hendersonville. Is Blue Water a seafood market? A wine shop? A restaurant? The answer is - "yes". Recently, owners Tracy and David Griffin took Blue Water to the next level by expanding seating (existing seating was limited downstairs and on the covered, enclosable front porch) into … [Read more...]

Bouchon, Asheville

Asheville restaurants aren't the usual focus of Hendersonville Epicurean reviews, but that doesn't mean I can't eat at them! This past Saturday, six of us had dinner at Bouchon.(photo: ashevillebouchon.com)Bouchon's catchy slogan, "French Comfort Food" and menu expression, "Bonjour Y'all" got me wondering what "Bouchon" translated to in English. Their website says, "Bouchon" is the French word for cork. It is also the colloquial expression for "bistro" in the Lyon area of France."More than mere … [Read more...]

Flat Rock Village Bakery, Flat Rock

Where better to have lunch on a hot day than on an expansive deck, in the shade of a beautiful Magnolia tree? Flat Rock Village Bakery has such a deck. It's a good thing, too, because the bakery is in the back/side (depending on how you look at it) of a retail gift shop and their inside dining space is limited to three or four small tables One time we stopped by the Bakery for lunch and walked in to find a sea of red-hatted ladies forming lines in two different directions. Talk about excited … [Read more...]

La Riserva….Part 2

Update: La Riserva is closed As is frequently the case in the restaurant business, there are things going on behind kitchen doors that shouldn't affect the quality of meals coming out through those doors and therefore, diners should be completely unaware of. Following my June 16th review of La Riserva Ristorante and Wine Bar in Hendersonville, their General Manager sent extremely sincere apologies from Chef/Restaurateur David Sparacino and herself regarding actions on the part of the Front … [Read more...]

Pulling A Fast One At La Riserva?

Update 1/1/09 - La Riserva is closed   (6/26/08 - Read La Riserva...Part 2 for follow-up comments related to this review)   Hardly! As the hostess seated us upstairs at La Riserva Ristorante and Wine Bar , a woman just leaving remarked, "That was outstanding". A good sign. La Riserva's interior is "bistroish" with a long narrow seating area downstairs. Upstairs is "L" shaped, with a bar at the top of the "L" and views of Main Street along the bottom. A few tables for dining al fresco have … [Read more...]

Sq 1 Bistro, Hendersonville

The WD40 was in my purse; I was ready to go to Sq 1 Bistro for Sunday brunch!Friends had been to Sq 1 for dinner a couple of nights earlier, and said either the kitchen or front door made such a horrible noise when opening and closing, it really put a damper on their meal. It turned into a sort of water-torture thing with each swing of the door anticipated throughout their meal.I wasn't about to let a squeaky door ruin our brunch! I would have had no problem slipping our server my mini spray can … [Read more...]

Sq 1 Bistro, Hendersonville

Alternate title - An Impromptu Chat with Joe Lewis, Executive Chef/Owner of Sq 1 Bistro, Hendersonville. As Hercule Poirot is fond of saying, (read with French accent), "it is the brain, the little grey cells, on which one must rely".My little grey cells were nagging at me. Something in Leigh Kelley's April 21st article in the Hendersonville Times-News, "Local Diners Get a Host of New Offerings" was needling for attention - but what?So today I re-read the article and figured it out as soon as I … [Read more...]

Sinbad Restaurant, Hendersonville

Can there be more than one "Sweet Spot"? Not when you're talking about a baseball bat, golf club or tennis racket. There's only one sweet spot - the one optimum hitting area on each is that spot. Same thing with seating in a movie theater or listening to a speaker setup - it would be the one best location for optimal effect. The sweet spot in movie theaters has been described as two thirds back, in the center, which causes a family break-up every time - kids to the front, my husband and I to the … [Read more...]
