Mama Christina's has been open in Flat Rock (across from the Post Office) about a month now. A few days ago, I was driving by and decided to pop in and check them out. They bill themselves as an Italian Pastry Shoppe and a Wine Shop that also serves ice cream, Italian food, has live music nightly and "Nellos Cabaret" Thursdays through Sundays. Went on a bakery run yesterday and took in seven of them around the Asheville area. Here are our findings in order of our trip... Please bear in mind that for most of these, it was our only visit and sometimes choice of product will make or break an impression... Lisa Hoffman and Matthew Hickman, co-owners of Underground Baking Co, usually stick to their own specialties: his-breads, hers-sweets. I recently discovered a Hoffman/Hickman collaboration: Jamaican Rum Raisin Bread Pudding! Hoffman bakes individual Bread Puddings in large muffin pans using Hickman's breads, and prices them at $2.50 each. As she packaged up my two, she asked if I'd like extra sauce on top. Finally I got my chance a week ago when stopping in to purchase a gift certificate for a friend's birthday gift.
