It means that the roaster has gone directly to the farmer to purchase their beans and the farmer has met certain criteria.(Direct Trade Logo)So what about "Fair Trade"? In 1998 non-profit TransFair USA began certifying Fair Trade coffee in the States. They are one of 23 international Fair Trade … [Read more...]

The Ugly Mug – Coffee Shop, Bakery, Both?

Do I go to The Ugly Mug for their coffee and lattes? Of course. Do I stop by this coffee shop even if I don't want coffee or a latte? You betcha!Take a look at the photo below of a Cherry Apricot Linzer ($2.29) I got there the other day and you'll see why I go to a coffee shop even when I don't want coffee (which is rare, I admit).Pastries at The Ugly Mug are either baked by Leatha (the owner) staff (that like to bake) or the "Hungarian couple". By that I mean a local couple who are Hungarian. … [Read more...]

Score!

Earlier this week, four of us took a drive up to Roan Mountain State Park in Tennessee. If you read Hendersonville Epicurean with any kind of regularity, you know I am a coffee freak who loves to check out local coffee shops wherever I go. This trip was no exception. On our way through Burnsville, NC, we passed Appalachian Java & Cafe on West Main Street ... and then turned around and went back. We needed sustenance for the road. Road Food defined: lattes and peanut M & … [Read more...]

Coffee Shop. Book Store. Music Venue. Church?

The signs said, "new coffee shop", so of course I followed.Following the bread-crumb-trail of signs stuck in the ground alongside Chimney Rock Rd/Hwy 64, led me to an interesting space at 2560 Chimney Rock Rd.Pulling up to this storefront for a quick look, I was a little confused, so decided to go inside and check it out. Here's the deal -This is a new space the size of a couple of small stores combined, opened by Straightway Ministries on October 27th. Straightway bills themselves as a … [Read more...]

Greenberry's Coffee & Tea Company, Asheville

If you've been a reader of Hendersonville Epicurean for a while, you know that Teen Daughter volunteers at Asheville's Animal Haven on Saturday mornings. Black Bear Coffee Co, Hendersonville

Quirky, Quenching, Quantites....Quintessential. Black Bear is one of those places that anchors a Main Street or even an entire downtown. They've been doing just that on Hendersonville's Main Street for fifteen years now. Locals have come to depend on them and visitors are happily surprised to discover them.
