Cabo's Burritos opened about a month ago in the space formerly occupied by The Caribbean at 1971 Asheville Hwy, Hendersonville, NC. You can miss it if you don't know where to look. Cabo's is near The Ugly Mug, on the other side of Asheville Hwy, across from Ingles Market. Look for this sign: Here's a shot of the front: See the yellow sign on the right? It's pointing to more parking in a large rear lot. A good thing, because the three or four spots in front fill up … [Read more...]
Something Fishy
Fishy Fishy Cafe, Southport, NC has so much going for it: good seafood, good location, good seating variety, good attitude. Funky signs and art are scattered around, adding to the beachy ambiance. In addition to the interior, semi-covered and covered outside dining areas, they also have a dock with tables under bright red umbrellas (not pictured). Fishy Fishy has some interesting history. Filming for ABC's "Revenge" pilot took place in and outside the cafe. For … [Read more...]
Different on a Couple Levels: Scully’s
Beginning late last year, owners began morphing Scully's into something a little different. Their logo went from "Scully's Signature Dine & Drink" to "Scully's Bar & Grille" They've also got a ". . . new menu and now some new windows on the street." You can see their menu here, but keep in mind it might be a little different at the restaurant. Built on the Walnut Street incline, Scully's has three distinct dining areas. Two are at a lower level: a room full of cozy red … [Read more...]
Dinner Wrecked
It's a given - Charleston has some of the best food in the world. It pretty much defines dining destination. We love visiting Charleston, but this time wanted to go more "local", hunting out spots known mostly to those who live there year-round. The Wreck of the Richard & Charlene used to be known only to locals, but since the 90's, they've gotten a lot of national press and now serve folks from all over the world. You'd never know it, though. I'm thinking only a certain percentage of … [Read more...]
The Old Post Office delivers Southern Style
On a dark island highway, cool wind in my hair Warm smell of surf & turf, rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light . . . Edisto Beach is a favorite vacation spot for families with young children and those wanting something a little quieter than Myrtle Beach. But when the adults want to go out for a nice dinner, there aren’t a whole lot of choices. One of the local favorites is The Old Post Office, outside of Edisto Beach, but on Edisto Island … [Read more...]
Sugarland: Bakery? Bar? Both!
Sugarland has only been in business three years, but has already been featured on the Food Network, MTV Good Morning America and in Southern Living magazine! When I asked Co-owner (with her husband) Katrina Ryan why she was getting so much national exposure, she said she wasn't exactly sure except she has a bright, colorful shop and is on a block of Franklin St. that probably gets more foot traffic than any other block in North Carolina. She also told me Sugarland is the only Bakery/Bar in … [Read more...]
Sushi in Fletcher!
Who knew? I've been driving by this place for years. The sign said something about a Japanese Steakhouse, which didn't do much for me, so I never stopped . . . until today. Okay. I did peek in the window a couple years ago, but didn't go in. Today I noticed a new sign: Ganko Express - Hibachi, Sushi, Chinese & Thai. Turns out ownership changed about a year ago. The new owners kept the name until recently re-branding, modifying their focus. The word "Sushi" is what led to skid marks … [Read more...]
It’s All Relative – Sol Y Luna
I was having one of those days. The kind where I'd agreed to meet a friend for lunch and then went to the wrong restaurant. After a quick call asking her where she was, I headed over to the right restaurant - on the other side of town. Ugh! Luckily it was a perfect day for al fresco dining so we chose a table out on Sol Y Luna's fabulous, tree-shaded, umbrella festooned deck. This is the same Laurel Park space most recently occupied by Ling's Bistro. Just after we sat down, bean dip … [Read more...]
Elena’s is Mexellent!
Watch out, Papas and Beer! New players are in town! Two Mexican restaurants opened recently; Elena's Mexican Grill (So Asheville/Arden) and Sol Y Luna (Hendersonville/Laurel Park - review coming soon). Elena's is new, but owned by the same people that own El Rebozo (2270 Hendersonville Rd, near DQ) and Casa Torres (336 Rockwood Rd Ste 109, near Arden Cracker Barrel). I've eaten at El Rebozo (it was good), but not Casa Torres. Rarely at a Mexican restaurant are you surprised by … [Read more...]
Roll of the Dice? Not at Thai Spice
There's no gambling involved - you can expect consistently good food and friendly staff every time you go to Thai Spice. Because it opened to very mixed reviews - it's authentic, it's not authentic, it's not spicy enough, it's just right - I've taken my time, making half a dozen visits before writing this review. In the interest of full disclosure, I'd like to say here and now that I'm in no way an expert on Thai cuisine and that this review is written from the perspective … [Read more...]
