Brioso Fresh Pasta Now Open – Biltmore Town Square

Brioso Pasta

Brioso Fresh Pasta first opened in Clemson, SC and has quickly spread with the addition of corporate as well as franchise stores. Their second franchise opened earlier this month in South Asheville's Biltmore Town Square. An interesting concept in "Fast Casual", Brioso makes fresh pasta throughout the day using machines that are in plain sight. They also have an open kitchen. Place your order right inside the front door, where menus are posted and available in print. Then take your … [Read more...]

Elena’s is Mexellent!

Elena's Grill

Watch out, Papas and Beer! New players are in town! Two Mexican restaurants opened recently; Elena's Mexican Grill (So Asheville/Arden) and Sol Y Luna (Hendersonville/Laurel Park - review coming soon). Elena's is new, but owned by the same people that own El Rebozo (2270 Hendersonville Rd, near DQ) and Casa Torres (336 Rockwood Rd Ste 109, near Arden Cracker Barrel). I've eaten at El Rebozo (it was good), but not Casa Torres. Rarely at a Mexican restaurant are you surprised by … [Read more...]

Fiore's South

Because you're a loyal Epicurean reader, I'm going to tell you about a fantastic Italian restaurant that opened in Arden so you can try it before everyone else in the neighborhood discovers just how good it is. Fiore's South is a second location for Fiore's Ristorante Toscana Owner/Chef Anthony Cerrato. It's located at 2310 Hendersonville Rd., Arden, NC and is easy to miss while driving in either direction on Hwy 25 (Hendersonville Rd), so keep an eye out! PIC and I thought we'd … [Read more...]

Get Your Game On at Hickory Tavern

Carolina Epicurean The Hickory Tavern

Culinary offerings in South Asheville have expanded over the past year and there are no indications this trend is slowing. One of the earlier new eateries to see South Asheville's potential was The Hickory Tavern. I wrote about their opening in this October 2, 2009 article. The "modern-tavern" interior with warm, natural finishes can be looked at two different ways: 1. sports-lovers-flat-screen-heaven OR 2. ADD-trigger-central. Multiple screens are visible from any seat in the house, … [Read more...]

Asheville Bakery Field Trip – Sweet Tooth’s Take

Went on a bakery run yesterday and took in seven of them around the Asheville area. Here are our findings in order of our trip... Please bear in mind that for most of these, it was our only visit and sometimes choice of product will make or break an impression... For an apples to apples comparison we had hoped to pick something we could get at each place, but everything was so varied it was virtually impossible. So we just picked things we thought we'd like! Creme Patisserie (640 Merrimon Ave) … [Read more...]

Hickory Tavern Grill & Raw Bar is scheduled to open in the next few weeks at Biltmore Town Square, off Long Shoals Rd in South Asheville. Looks like this is an expanding enterprise, with six locations in Charlotte alone and one each in Hickory, Mooresville, Spartanburg, Huntersville and (opening soon) Gastonia. Many of their locations feature live music and Karaoke. And according to their website, Hickory Tavern is a good place to go to watch sporting events: "Interested in the big game? … [Read more...]

1 Idea – 3 Guys – 1 Goal and Main . . . "Because Main Can Be Anything"

That's the answer co-owners Mike Vaughn, Joe Douglas and Chris Carlson gave in late 2004 when asked where the name came from for their first restaurant, 131 Main. The idea was to have a name that wouldn't restrict the eatery to one type of cuisine, but allow them instead to focus on their credo of "no freezers, fresh produce daily, limited menu [exceptional service] and [remain] privately held". After opening the first 131 Main in Cornelius (just North of Charlotte) in August of 2004, they … [Read more...]
