Waiting in The Green Room

The Green Room

Hours of operation should be easy to find on restaurant websites. And it's always best if they're correct. Next best is having a phone message that includes current hours. A friend and I decided to meet at The Green Room this past Tuesday at 10:30am, opening time according to their website. But wait - their online Breakfast Menu said they opened at 11:00am. Calling got a phone message something like, "thanks for calling, we're not open now, leave a message." At 10:30am, they were … [Read more...]

Dinner Wrecked

The Wreck

It's a given - Charleston has some of the best food in the world. It pretty much defines dining destination. We love visiting Charleston, but this time wanted to go more "local", hunting out spots known mostly to those who live there year-round. The Wreck of the Richard & Charlene used to be known only to locals, but  since the 90's, they've gotten a lot of national press and now serve folks from all over the world. You'd never know it, though. I'm thinking only a certain percentage of … [Read more...]

The Old Post Office - Carolina Epicurean

On a dark island highway, cool wind in my hair Warm smell of surf & turf, rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light . . . Edisto Beach is a favorite vacation spot for families with young children and those wanting something a little quieter than Myrtle Beach. But when the adults want to go out for a nice dinner, there aren’t a whole lot of choices. One of the local favorites is The Old Post Office, outside of Edisto Beach, but on Edisto Island … [Read more...]

A Saucy Southern Tavern

Smoke on the Water

We hadn't really planned on having dinner at Smoke on the Water. We had planned on taking advantage of Smoke's Happy Hour. From 4:00pm to 7:00pm Monday through Saturday, drinks are downright cheap, making this one of the best Happy Hours in town. Draft Beer and Liquor Drinks - 1/2 Off, Bottles of Beer and Glasses of Wine - $1.00 Off. After a couple drinks in the warm, clubby bar, we shifted from lounge-type seating over to a booth in the dining area. The photo below is the view from one … [Read more...]

High Cotton Mother’s Day

High Cotton

High Cotton's fresh, crisp architecture and decor set off terrific views from all seating areas. Their menu's also kept fresh and crisp with creative new drinks and dishes added regularly. This year for Mother's Day, I fancied a real treat for myself . . . and the rest of the family. A dress-up affair for PIC, myself, College Son 2 and Teen Daughter. What better than a scenic drive "down the mountain" to Greenville, SC' followed by a luscious brunch and drinks overlooking the Reedy … [Read more...]

Find Your Happy Place at Adams Bistro

Adams Bistro - Carolina Epicurean

Watching people come and go at Adams Bistro on the East side of Greenville, SC (MAP), what came to mind was "this is a happy place". We didn't feel out of place in the least, but lots of regulars and locals obviously frequent the Bistro. Every other time the door opened, you'd hear something like, "hey, didn't know you were coming here tonight!" It was fun to watch. We were both in the mood for salads, but PIC thought he'd start off with "a little" Loaded Potato Soup ($4.75). Rich, … [Read more...]

Take a Nose Dive!

Nose Dive - Carolina Epicurean

It's not really fair to review a new restaurant until they've been open a month or so, but I wanted to tell you about Greenville, SC's latest offering - Nose Dive. PIC and I went "down the mountain" this past Tuesday, February 8th, to take advantage of mid-50's temperatures in Greenville. We planned on walking Main Street, Riverplace and Falls Park, lunching at Nose Dive. If you have trouble viewing the video below, click here. Breakfast at Mary Beth’s

Mary Beth's - Carolina Epicurean

Mary Beth's opened in downtown Greenville, SC at 500 E McBee Ave in 2008. Since then, three themes have emerged: "Great food", "Best breakfast in town" and "overpriced". I wanted to check them out for myself, so PIC and I headed over for breakfasts of Applewood Smoked Bacon Waffle ($7.95) and Short Stack Blueberry Pancakes ($5.95) with a French Press (dark roast) Coffee ($4.50) to share. See Mary Beth's Breakfast and Lunch menu here. And, here's their Dinner menu. As far as waffles … [Read more...]

Described as a "Mediterranean-themed restaurant with a menu featuring global influences from Spain, Morocco, Italy, France, Greece, Africa and the Middle East", The Lazy Goat overlooks Reedy River from the heart of downtown Greenville, South Carolina's Riverplace. Finding The Lazy Goat isn't easy for first-timers. It's behind the Hampton Inn and Suites Riverplace, in the same building and accessed either at street level or river level. The Goat's lower level patio is sandwiched between … [Read more...]

Mennonite Coffee

Carolina Epicurean Abbeville, SC

At Main Street Coffee Co in Abbeville, SC, coffee drinks are hot, tasty and made by Mennonites. They make a pretty good Raspberry Italian Soda, too. Exploring upstate South Carolina's back roads, PIC and I stumbled upon Abbeville, an absolutely wonderful town anchored by an absolutely wonderful town square. Surrounding the park-like center of the square are meticulously kept quaint shops, the Court House and the Opera House. Not just any opera house, The Abbeville Opera House … [Read more...]
