Asheville – What is the hottest cocktail component these days? Sherry. Mixologists across the country are using it as the perfect base for complex cocktails. Ranging from bone-dry Finos to rich, nutty Olorosos, the sky is the limit for inventive combinations. This was recently demonstrated by the wide variety of cocktails created for the 2017 U.S. Sherry Cocktail Competition held in October at the Clover Club in Brooklyn.
Phoebe Esmon of Cúrate in Asheville knows her way around Sherry: she tied for second runner-up. Her cocktail, El Periodo Rosa, brings together Manzanilla with watermelon juice to create a drink that’s a little tart with a little salinity, and very refreshing.
