Not Everest, But Close: Point Lookout Vineyards

What are two besties who both have a bent for all things culinary to do when they find themselves at the hair salon at the same time? Why finish up and pick an adventure du jour! This time it was a trip to Point Lookout Vineyards (pointlookoutvineyards.com/).

We totally lucked out with the weather! It was gorgeous when we got to Point Lookout’s tasting room at the top of Mt. Everest (just kidding, but kinda’ felt that way). BTW, the drive might be considered by some as an adventure in itself. Map it before going.

You could see beautiful views for miles and miles in a 180° + range. When clouds started slowly rolling in, the view changed, but was full of interest and drama.

We were lucky enough to get a tour of the facility (thanks, Bill!) that included a private event space, Groom and Bride rooms, and even the kitchen, which you know was close to our hearts. As a well equipped catering support kitchen, it’s close, but not a full kitchen.

Speaking of brides and grooms, Point Lookout already has dozens of weddings booked for this season. I questioned the HUGE cross placed on the patio that would be the obvious spot for the nuptials, asking how they handle weddings of other faiths (Jewish, Muslim, etc.). The answer might surprise you as it did me: the cross is removable if that is preferred.

They cater to private events, but have plenty of their own, including a Low Country Boil & Music from New South Rising, Game of Thrones Watch Parties, Easter Sunrise Service, live music, and more. See what’s happening next on their Facebook Events schedule.

The “tasting room” is a huge, open area with a gorgeous wood-burning fireplace on the back wall and three sides that can be open to the outside or enclosed with heavy, clear plastic “curtains”.

I chose 5 wines and 1 mead: Merlot, 2061 ($8/$18.75) (my favorite as it turned out), Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 ($8/$22.95), “Cliffield” Red Blend, 2015 ($8/$19.95), “Pavilion” Barrel-Select Red Blend, 2016 ($8/$29.95), and “Javine” Mocha Red Wine ($8/$20.95) for the wines. The mead was World’s Edge Meadery “Beguile” Raspberry Mead ($8/$19.95).

As far as the mead goes, I thought I’d like the Raspberry Mead because I’d had another maker’s Raspberry Mead and loved it. No. Didn’t like it. It made my face involuntarily screw up. BUT, my friend DID like it. I had steered away from the World’s Edge Meadery “Cyser” Apple Mead my friend had ordered, but loved that one! Just goes to prove everyone’s palate is different.

AND they are in the process of building an actual cave into the hillside below the main building. It’s going to have its own tasting room. Can. Not. Wait.

You MUST go! Let me know when you’ll be there. I might just join you!
