Historic S&W Building opens Spring 2020 as Food & Beverage Hall

0

Asheville’s iconic S&W Building will become a food hall focused on the best of local food and beer when it opens next spring as The S&W Market. The Ellington Realty Group project will revitalize the building, located at 56 Patton Avenue, which will become home to a roster of top local restaurants curated by culinary consultant Meherwan Irani of Chai Pani Restaurant Group.

The S&W Market will also welcome Highland Brewing Company back to downtown, where their story began 25 years ago. Asheville’s original craft brewery will anchor the two-story space and feature a first-floor bar area and a mezzanine-level bar, tasting room and event space. Highland’s founder Oscar Wong said, “Highland was part of the rebirth of downtown Asheville back in the ‘90s along with many others – to return downtown and be part of the rebirth of this iconic building is nothing short of amazing.”

Upon entering the building, guests will be greeted with a sampling of flavorful dining options from four Asheville-based food stalls hand-selected for their crave-worthy offerings and ties to the city along with Highland Brewing’s main-level bar.

On the mezzanine, an expanded lineup of Highland’s small-batch, sour and barrel-aged beer offerings will be featured. The space will have seating for guests to enjoy a pint with their food and a view of the activity below or the city outside. It will also house a separate private events room with a roaring ‘20s vibe and room for 40 seated guests.

“I’ve never had an interest in opening a second taproom,” said Highland’s second-generation family-owner and president, Leah Wong Ashburn. “But this confluence was powerful. We are engaged in revitalizing a piece of Asheville’s history and working with an incredibly talented group of Asheville entrepreneurs who all believe in authenticity, family and having fun with this project.”

The feeling is mutual. The S&W was purchased in 2017 by brothers Douglas and Kenneth Ellington, who are the great-nephews of the building’s noted architect Douglas Ellington.

“There is a great deal of meaning for us in this particular project,” says Douglas Ellington. “We’re honored to work alongside Meherwan and the wonderful team at Highland Brewing to create a welcoming space that will enhance our downtown community and revitalize a beautiful historic building that has provided fond memories for many in Asheville.”

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the revived S&W will serve as an homage to the property’s storied past, while also honoring its place within the Asheville community’s future. The S&W Building is a celebrated staple among the city’s buzzing downtown for its striking Art Deco style and intricate architectural details.

Much of the time-honored space will remain unchanged, including its familiar facade of wide arched windows and terra cotta panels, accented with richly colored green and blue tiles. A revamped interior will seek to evoke the same energy of the bustling dining destination that many enjoyed while growing up in Asheville, and ample sidewalk seating will adorn the building’s front.

“With the culinary mecca that Asheville has become, we feel that a food hall focused on the best of local food and beer in the center of downtown will be a huge hit with both locals and out-of-town visitors,” says Burns Aldridge, Managing Broker of Ellington Realty Group. “Food halls have become incredibly popular in the past few years as the consumer demand for authentic, healthier yet casual food options has grown. The S&W Market will offer counter service with delicious local food, just as the building was originally intended.”

Restaurateurs signed onto the project will be announced at a later date.

Guided Tree Walk along Oklawaha Greenway, Oct 5

0

On Saturday, October 5, at 10 a.m., a Guided Tree Walk Along the Oklawaha Greenway will focus on identifying and understanding trees, especially those native to the area. The program is open to the public at no charge. Meet at Patton Park in the circular pavilion near the basketball courts. The walk will take about 90 minutes, returning to Patton Park. The hike will be held rain or shine. The program is co-sponsored by Hendersonville Tree Board and Friends of the Oklawaha Greenway.

Mark Madsen, a member of the Tree Board and an ISA Certified Arborist, will lead the walk. The tour will start by looking at trees in Patton Park that are suitable for home gardens and then move on to look at many species of native trees in the wetland forest along Mud Creek.

Oklawaha Greenway is a three-mile-long paved walkway meandering through meadows, wetlands, and forests, and linking Jackson Park, Patton Park, and Berkley Park. The walk will be along a portion of this greenway.

“The Oklawaha Greenway is popular for recreation, transportation, and family outings,” said Suzanne Hale, a member of the Friends group. “Especially in autumn, it provides an excellent outdoor classroom to learn more about our native trees.”

Hendersonville Tree Board is commissioned by the City of Hendersonville to provide advice on the selection and care of trees and shrubs in public places. The Tree Board also educates the public concerning the economic and aesthetic benefits of trees and shrubs for the community. The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Hendersonville as a Tree City USA for 25 years because of its high level of tree care. The city became a Bee City USA in 2015.

Whoadeo: 13th Annual Fun-Filled Free Kids Event Sat, Sept 21!

As fall approaches, families look for unique events combining family fun, great kids activities, festive fall decorations, food, and mascots. All that and much more can be found at a memory-making event at no cost to participants – the 13th annual Whoadeo (https://dpstampede.com/pigeon-forge/whoadeo-kids-event-at-stampede-september-21-2019), held at Dolly Parton’s Stampede in Pigeon Forge on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Dolly Parton’s Stampede Dinner Attraction, Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show, and the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud, along with partners Food City and Coca-Cola®, present this fun-filled event, with activities including costume contests, mascot characters from a variety of Smoky Mountain attractions, stick horse competitions, and a free outdoor carnival from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Area attractions as well as law enforcement, fire and rescue partners also are part of this special event, adding to the family atmosphere and offering information in an entertaining way.

Last year’s Whoadeo added a celebrity storytelling stage highlighting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program. The storytelling was a crowd favorite and returns with guest storytellers including Knoxville TV personalities, Stampede emcee Jay Teter and his sidekick Skeeter, Pirates Voyage very own Blackbeard, and performers from Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud, The Comedy Barn Theater and Smoky Mountain Opry.

For the costume contests and stick horse competitions, children will participate in three age groups: ages 3-5; 6-9 and 10-12. Every Whoadeo participant (ages 3-12) receives a free Stampede admission ticket to the 3:30 p.m. dinner show on Sept. 21.

Whoadeo

Children may register for the Whoadeo on Saturday, Sept. 21 beginning at 8 a.m. at Dolly Parton’s Stampede located at 3849 Parkway in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. The only requirement to compete in the competition is a stick horse which can be homemade or purchased. Free stick horses also will be provided at the event, while supplies last. Participants will compete in a series of Whoadeo competitions, including a cowboy costume contest, a “parade of stick horses” and “stick horse barrel races.” These contests all will take place inside the Stampede building, offering a rare chance for children to actually participate on the main arena floor. Contestants compete for first, second and third place prizes in each of three age brackets (ages 3-5, 6-9 and 10-12) for each competition – including bicycles and tablets.

“This is Food City’s 13th year to join Dolly Parton’s dinner shows for this family-friendly Whoadeo event,” said Steven C. Smith, President/CEO of Food City. “From returning competitors to first-time participants, this event celebrates creativity in an atmosphere that’s fun for everyone.”

All children must be accompanied by a parent and/or guardian. Families are invited to attend the free Whoadeo carnival from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Stampede parking lot. Food City will provide complimentary snacks for participating children, and Coca-Cola will provide free soft drinks. Each Whoadeo participant also will receive a Kid’s Club backpack from Food City (while supplies last), a voucher for one free child’s ticket to The Comedy Barn Theater and a complimentary one-day child’s ticket to Dollywood (valid for children ages 3-9 years old).

For more information on the Whoadeo Kids Event, call (865) 453-4400 or visit dpstampede.com/kidsevent.

The Bands

Boogi Therapi

Ryan “RnB” Barber is a proud staple of Asheville NC’s legendary music scene, at the forefront of its funk and R&B community. Drawing from a lifetime of singing, rapping, producing and touring across the nation, Ryan has released 6 full length studio albums. He has also been featured on many high profile projects, including producing on two of R&B stalwart W. Ellington Felton’s recent albums, and also singing and rapping on the 2017 GRAMMY winning album “Infinity Plus One” by Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, just one of the groups he actively tours with.

Born to a musical family and steeped in gospel and R&B from his first heartbeat, Ryan started his musical education in the church choir at the age of nine, and continued adding to a deepening knowledge of rhythm and percussion by joining the school marching band at sixteen. But it was love for hip hop, funk, new jack swing and especially R&B that beat in his chest, so he quickly began applying all he’d learned to producing his own tracks, inspired by J Dilla, A Tribe Called Quest, Gerald Levert and Teddy Riley. Mixing a classic beat production feel with soulful Southern
singing and a fearless falsetto, Ryan solidified his musical identity as a recording artist as well as a highly sought after performer and collaborator.

Already known throughout the SouthEast as a standout voice, charismatic bandleader, and musical workhorse, Ryan “RnB” Barber has begun spreading his soaring funkiness across the nation, recently rocking sets at Chicago’s Lollapalooza Festival and performing live on SiriusXM in Washington, DC, delivering uplifting messages with a timeless soul that
sounds like both yesterday and tomorrow.

Girls Day Out: sipping & snacking our way through Grove Arcade’s Restaurant Row

Warm days full of sunshine and breezes are perfect for eating outside. It was just such a day recently, and past time to do something fun with girlfriends. Strolling from restaurant to restaurant at Grove Arcade’s Restaurant Row (https://grovearcade.com/), stopping at patio tables shaded by colorful umbrellas, we caught up over glasses of wine & shared plates.

Of course we also spent some time browsing the shops and outdoor Maker’s Market, where local artists and craftspeople sell their work.

The afternoon flew by. It was a perfect Girls Day Out, but it would have been just as fun with the guys along.

We stopped at all six restaurants, sampling different cuisines at each. Of course you can go to fewer restaurants and still have a fabulous time! The following list is in the order we chose, but you can mix it up to suite yourself. Menus and hours are posted on line.

Battery Park Book Exchange

Battery Park Book Exchange
La Premier Tier Champagne Flight

WEBSITE

The full name of this wondrous labyrinth of the written word is “Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar”. That’s right, you can enjoy “edibles and libations” ordered from a huge selection of wines, sparkling wine cocktails, coffee, beer, cider, cheese boards, and desserts at this comfortably sophisticated used book store. On weekends you can listen to live music while you browse. Done browsing? There’s lots of seating where musicians set up near the bar, as well as throughout the bookshop. We shared a Champagne Flight and a French Cultural Platter. Take a look at their menu here

Baba Nahm

Baba Nahm
Hummus Bowl: pickled vegetable, Israeli salad, feta, olives, sumac, zatar, parsley, toasted pita and EVOO

WEBSITE

Baba Nahm serves up middle eastern cuisine in a “grab and go” format. That doesn’t mean you can’t eat in. There are plenty of seats inside and a few tree-shaded picnic benches, where we sat, out front. That Hummus Bowl was fantastic, as was the filled Flat Bread (pictured below) that we shared. Fabulous seasoning! See their menu here.

Carmel’s Kitchen & Bar

Carmel's Kitchen & Bar
Fried Green Tomatoes: Fried tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, arugula, balsamic vinaigrette, bacon, basil aioli

WEBSITE

Carmel’s keeps it casual while serving up a wide selection of Southern inspired dishes like delicious Fried Green Tomatoes (pictured above), Pimento Cheese, and Catfish Reuben. Their corner patio, next to the Makers Market, is great for people watching. And if you’re there on a weekend, you’ll get a good taste of what Asheville is about. Watch as various types of tours cruise by: the Amazing Pubcycle, LaZoom Bus, and Gray Line Hop-On, Hop-Off Trolleys. If you’re on a Trolley Tour, definitely hop off at Grove Arcade. Look for the red umbrellas. See Carmel’s “All Day” menu here. And don’t miss the dessert and drink menus.

Modesto

Modesto
Octopus: Asiago, fennel seed, chili flakes, tomato, olive oil

WEBSITE

Oh, Modesto. How I yearn to see you again for a full meal. Like in the old country, Modesto wraps you in luscious, generously portioned Italian food. Pizzas and Calzones are baked in their imported Italian Mugnaini wood-fired oven. The Octopus pictured above was beautifully presented and cooked perfectly! Everything we ordered was very good. We did go a little overboard here, but it couldn’t be helped. See their menu here.

BurgerWorx

BurgerWorx
Build your own amazing burger, or choose one of their house specialties

WEBSITE

By now you’re wondering, what were they thinking? How could anyone eat that much? Here’s a little secret; we wanted to sample the flavor of all six restaurants, so we left with a few boxes of what would become delicious leftovers. BurgerWorx is a fun concept. They have House Specialties you can order, or you can “build” your own burger by filling in a detailed form that covers type of meat, cheese, toppings, sauces, extras, and type of bun. These burgers were dripping with juicy goodness. You can also order ahead online for pickup using their LineSkip App. To see all the options, click on the “Menu” link on their website.

Sante Wine Bar & Taproom

Sante Wine Bar and Tap Room
Olive Melange: Herbed Greek olive mix

WEBSITE

Our adventure wrapped up on Sante Wine Bar’s patio as the sun was getting low and it was cooling off. The Olive Melange was the only thing we ordered. I confess, really it was me that ordered the mix. Everyone else put up their hands in surrender when the server came to take our order. I knew the olives would travel well, so brought most of them home to share with my husband later. They went well with our wine, though. And I love that they serve the olives with an empty dish for pits. You know olives are best with pits in, right? Next time we do this, we’ll have to start at Sante. I’ve been many times before and know they have a great selection of snacks and heartier fare that pair well with whatever you’re drinking. See Sante’s menu here.

Epicurean Notes:

  • As always, verify days and hours of operation before you go, if you’re heart is set on a particular restaurant
  • And a reminder that online menus give you a good idea of what to expect, but you might find that some items have changed when you go to the restaurant
  • Free Wi-Fi is available throughout Grove Arcade
